My Approach to Photographing Families & Newborns in Coastal Virginia (And a Small Favor 💛)

If you’ve ever worried that family photos will feel stiff, awkward, or stressful, I want you to know something first:

That’s never my goal.

My approach to photography is rooted in connection, comfort, and capturing moments that feel like you. Whether I’m photographing a growing family, a brand-new baby, or a quiet in-between moment, I’m always looking for what’s real, not forced.

Why I Photograph the Way I Do

I believe photos should feel natural, emotional, and timeless. Not overly posed. Not rushed. And definitely not something you feel nervous about.

When clients come to me, many say the same thing:

“I’m not comfortable in front of the camera.”

That’s okay and honestly, expected. My job isn’t for you to know what to do. It’s to gently guide you, create space for connection, and document the moments that unfold naturally.

What a Session With Me Feels Like

Think less “stand here and smile” and more:

• Light direction and gentle prompts

• Space for kids to be kids

• Snuggles, laughter, movement, and pauses

• A calm, unhurried environment

For newborn sessions, this means following your baby’s lead. For family sessions, it means embracing real life, wiggles, giggles, and all.

Why Coastal Virginia Inspires My Work

Living and working in Coastal Virginia gives me so much inspiration, the soft light, the open spaces, the slower pace, and the sense of home that so many families feel here.

My goal is always the same:
To create images that feel honest, meaningful, and full of heart, the kind you’ll look back on and feel.
