What to Wear for Spring Photo Sessions in Williamsburg, VA
Spring sessions are some of my favorites to photograph.
The light is softer. The temperatures are comfortable. Colonial Williamsburg is blooming. Everything feels fresh and full of possibility.
But one of the biggest questions I get every single year is:
“What should we wear?”
So let’s simplify it.

1. Start With Soft, Inspired Colors
Spring is not the time for heavy, dark tones.
Instead, lean into:
-
Soft blues
-
Creams and ivories
-
Light sage
-
Blush
-
Dusty rose
-
Pale lavender
-
Light denim
Colonial Williamsburg especially pairs beautifully with muted tones and soft neutrals. These colors complement the brick, cobblestone, and greenery instead of competing with it.
If you’re booking a branding session, think about your brand colors, but soften them slightly for spring. The goal is cohesive, not loud.
2. Choose Texture Over Pattern
Instead of bold prints, choose visual interest through texture.
Think:
-
Linen dresses
-
Light sweaters
-
Flowy skirts
-
Layered fabrics
-
Subtle ruffles
-
Lightweight button-downs
Texture photographs beautifully. Large patterns often distract from faces and faces are always the focus.
For newborn sessions at home, soft knits and neutral layers feel timeless and cozy.

3. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans.
Instead:
-
Choose 2–3 complementary colors
-
Mix light neutrals with one soft accent color
-
Let one person (often mom) pick her outfit first, then build around it
For families, this creates movement and depth in your photos.
For college grads, choose one outfit that feels classic and one that feels like you. A dressy option and a relaxed option works beautifully.
For branding clients, plan outfits around storylines, one polished look, one approachable look, and one that highlights personality.
4. Consider Movement
Spring sessions shine when outfits move naturally.
Flowy dresses. Light fabrics. Open cardigans. Wide-leg pants.
Movement creates dimension in photos, especially outdoors in Colonial Williamsburg where we walk between locations and capture natural, candid moments.
Structured, stiff clothing can feel limiting on camera.

5. Think About the Whole Frame
Shoes matter.
Undergarments matter.
Watch bands matter.
Choose:
-
Neutral shoes
-
Minimal, timeless jewelry
-
Clean nails (especially for close-up newborn and grad shots)
For branding sessions, avoid smart watches unless they fit your brand aesthetic.
Small details elevate your final gallery more than you think.
6. When in Doubt — Keep It Simple
If you’re overwhelmed, here’s a safe formula that always works in spring:
For women:
-
Light, flowy dress in a soft neutral or pastel
For men:
-
Light button-down + neutral pants
For kids:
-
Soft textures + coordinating tones
For branding:
-
One structured look + one softer lifestyle look
Simple photographs beautifully.
Final Thought
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is connection.
When you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, it shows in your expressions. And that’s what makes your photos feel real.
If you’re booking a spring session with me, including Colonial Spring Minis, I provide a detailed style guide and personal guidance so you don’t have to figure this out alone.
Spring light. Fresh blooms. Soft color palettes.
It’s a beautiful season to document your story.
